Roses and carnations can remain attractive for several days when they receive proper care. Warm weather, unclean water and blocked stems are common reasons natural cut flowers wilt prematurely, particularly in Bengaluru homes and event spaces.
Begin by placing the flowers in water as soon as possible. Before arranging them, cut approximately one to two centimetres from each stem at a diagonal angle. This creates a larger surface through which the flower can absorb water.
Follow these practical care steps:
- Use a thoroughly cleaned vase.
- Remove every leaf that would sit below the waterline.
- Keep the arrangement away from direct sunlight and warm appliances.
- Replace cloudy water immediately.
- Recut the stems every two days.
- Keep flowers away from ripening fruit, which releases ethylene gas.
Roses may develop bent heads when air becomes trapped in their stems or water uptake is interrupted. Recutting the stems and placing them in fresh water can sometimes restore firmness. Carnations are generally more resilient, but their water should still be changed regularly to prevent bacterial growth.
Fresh flowers from Vivan Flora in Wilson Garden should also be unpacked carefully so the petals are not crushed. With clean tools, cool placement and consistent hydration, both roses and carnations can retain their colour and shape for longer.
